No disc slot on imac

How do I load a CD or DVD into my iMac (bought Jan. 2013). An instruction book I have tells me that there "is a thin slot on the side of the iMac. Discs are inserted by simply pushing them into this (SuperDrive slot)."

It’s not like Apple has provided no means to access optical media. When was the last time you needed a CD/DVD drive on your iMac? I understand that not everyone lives on the bleeding edge of technology, but Apple couldn’t care less about folks stuck in the old days.
